Gruene Saloon - Texas Gruene is an area located just within New Braunfels city limits which was settled in the 1840a by German immigrant farmers. This is the oldest dance hall in Texas located in New Braunfels Texas. The Ernst Gruene family which is also the towns name, organized the town with a store, gristmill and a saloon and community center . Also the name Gruene is prononced "Green". The Ernst Gruene led the way to build a community for the cotton farmers. In the early 1920s the town became a ghost town when the cotton crops was destroy by insects. Gruene Hall is still in business today with a saloon and dance hall. with nightly music. The water tower stands behind the dance hall as a symbol of what it was back in the day as now the city takes care of their water needs.
